Social Network Optimization is the new SEO/SEM
Wow, I had no idea this was going on:
“need someone with knowledge on how to post and title youtube videos and digg articles in a compelling manner… will be paid bonuses for results (ie getting on the first page of Digg, getting lots of viewers, comments, channel subscribers etc) in Youtube” -NYCraigslist Posting
“We need someone with experience in adding friends via Friendblaster Pro or other...
Brand Awesomeness
Chris Matthews of Specialized has a great idea brewing about why Brand Awesomeness is the new brand awareness.
I’m not a big fan of “branding” in it’s classic sense. It seems to be relied upon too often as a crutch to support marketing efforts that don’t have a clear message, strategy, and direction. “Oh, this is more of a branding ad/email/website/billboard”…I’ve heard and read that often. In...
Goodbye DRM, you won’t be missed
“The slow death of digital rights” - The Economist
Radioheads success is just the latest signal that DRM is dying a welcomed if unanticipated early demise.
“iTunes Plus DRM-free tracks expanding, dropping to 99 cents” - Ars Technica
There’s now no reason to buy any other kind of music. I just thought I’d point this out.
And of course, there’s always been eMusic who’s been selling flat rate...

That being said,
Nokia is being handed a sharp lesson in business basics: don’t compete with your biggest customers.
In August, the Finnish phone giant announced it was going “beyond the phone” and creating an online portal called Ovi in a bid to become a major service company. This would offer music, maps and games - bringing it into competition with its biggest channel: the network operators.

The G-phone stirreth
Google said to be shipping 50,000 Gphones by year’s end. A UBS analyst is rumored to have information that HTC, a Taiwanese handset manufacturer, will ship about 50,000 cell phones made for Google by the end of
the year. “These initial phones are not going to be for sale, says Benjamin Schachter, at UBS. “These are going to be available for developers only to understand how the software works.” ...
A Clever Disguise
We’re changing our appearance over here at thomaspurves.com. Those (most) of you on rss haven’t even noticed, but anyone browsing the old fashioned way will be noticing a lot of visual and layout changes. Please bear with and forgive intermittent ugliness other wierdness. Still a lot of work to do on different blocks of this theme over the next few days. Or weeks. Photo by Michele Perras. Rawr. ...

What you need to know about FaceBook
My home town Toronto just held it’s second ever FacebookCamp to another near-soldout crowd. I’d say approaching 250. You really can’t swing a cat in this town without someone tagging the cat on facebook. Ami Vora form facebook led off, followed by a rather exhaustive series of talks and demos from local facebook app builders and marketers. of note: At Harvard., Amy Vora maintains 43 friends...
Leopard’s new dock bumps top
Video of the new doc in the upcoming MacOS Leopard. I’ve never really liked the dock in OSX. It’s too smug. And I’ve always felt it offers crappy visual feedback on what applications and files are currently open. Expose is excellent way to do exactly this with a single click. BUT I’d like to point out that that the much-maligned Windows taskbar provides highly efficient visual feedback - with...
Flight
I love the French word for liftoff décollage – literally to unglue the aircraft from the tarmac.
As though this whole matter of gravity had just been an issue of so much children’s glue stuck to the bottoms of our shoes all this time. To land the recollage. Ladies and gentlemen, patiently return your tray tables and seatbacks to their regular position while our captain carefully re-glues the...

Reflections on design
As may occur to you too after playing with one of the new iPods in the apple store for a bit (for example). Otherwise, pretty nifty products.
The 80s had neon. The nineties dropshadows. We get reflections i guess. Your thoughts?

MS: Dump Vista, Save Thyself
A great post over at cnet that cuts to the bone: Why Microsoft must abandon Vista to save itself
And please MS, for the next go around try to put your users first. Remember, they’re the ones (by the billions) who have use it. It’s almost a moral issue. As the industry standard, when you falter, the world suffers for it.
We’ll forgive you, just please come out with something better. And soon if...
